Always considered to be the pearl of the Amalfi Coast, it enjoys a mild, dry climate, thanks to its enviable position. Three miles out to sea, the little archipelago of the "Li Galli" islands consists of the Gallo Lungo, the Rotonda and the Castelluccio. According to legend, this was the mythical dwelling place of the bewitching sirens, and it became a refuge for the artists Massine and Nurejev. Its propitious geographical position places it in the centre of one of the loveliest territories, rich in history and natural beauty.
This was one of the four historic maritime republics in Italy. It still has its former medieval layout and several impressive historic remains. The most important monument is without doubt the Cathedral, with many different architectural styles one upon the other, the result of a succession of past rulers. The Cathedral Museum of Sacred Art inside the Basilica has a collection of valuable religious objects. Just behind the town, in the valley known as the “Valley of the Mills”, the intriguing ruins of the old Amalfi paper mills where the so-called “carta a mano” (handmade paper) was produced in the 13th century are still standing.
This small town not far from Amalfi is considered the “town of music”. Breathtaking views, Arab-Norman buildings and a lot of music are the features of one of the most beautiful places in Italy. In the wonderful gardens of Villa Rufolo, the most important philharmonic orchestras in the world come to perform. A visit to the splendid eleventh-century cathedral and the monumental group of the Monastery of Saint Francis, built in the 13th century, should not be foregone.
